Hello. Can you tell me how games made on Unity or Unreal Engine usually run on a dedicated server? What platform do they run on, and where are such servers usually stored?

I would also be grateful for recommendations of reliable hosting where you can rent a server to run your own game.

We use Pterodactyl and it works well for our needs.

You can see the list of supported games here:

If a game is not supported, you can easily create support for it by creating a Pterodactyl egg which defines how to run the game. Note, in almost all cases the game must support running on Linux in headless mode.

Pterodactyl and Game Hosting
You could start up a virtual machine on your local computer and try out Pterodactyl.

If you require the best gaming experience, you'll want a dedicated server from a company that specializes in low-latency network connectivity.

One of the most important components of choosing a virtual server or a dedicated server is the physical location in the world. You'll want to position your server in the most geographically close place to your gamer clients. This will give them the lowest latency to your game server and they'll have the best gaming experience in this way.

Games made with Unity or Unreal usually run on Linux-based dedicated servers for performance and cost. These servers are often hosted in data centers (like AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or specialized game hosts).

Good game server hosts:

OVHcloud (reliable, affordable)

Hetzner (great for EU)

Amazon GameLift (for scaling multiplayer games)

ScalaCube or Nodecraft (easy setup for indie devs)
