Hi Everyone,
We plan to launch around 7000 (just for reference) simple UGC (User Generated content) WordPress websites as follows:
- All sites will be Word Press. Majority of the sites are going to be using same/similar UGC driven simple and fast theme design. Nothing complex.
- All 7000 sites will be independent and have unique domain names.
- We plan to manage the sites using MainWP plugin (which I believe needs it's own unique hosting)
- All sites will use Blocksy Theme, along with Stackable. Both Blocksy and Stackable will be Pro/Premium versions for unlimited domains/sites use. In additional, all sites will have Users posting content via Front End (using plugin like Gravity Forms or WP Form or some other suitable Front End posting plugin)
- Currently all domains are un-developed and only get about 7000 unique visitors/day. I guess Bandwidth/transfer usage is not a big issue in the beginning.
- Each site is independent/unique (we are NOT using WP Multisite because we may sell a domain or a site occasionally so want to keep all sites individual so no problem if selling any site in future)
- It appears we may need a huge Storage capacity to host all 7000 sites (storage needs will even increase further once the sites get traction in future and users start posting content such as posts, articles, links, pics, videos, reviews, etc).
Looking for guidance/suggestions on:
- How/Where to host MainWP plugin? How to ensure proper remote backups? What hosting specs we need?
- How/Where to host all 7000 WP websites as detailed above? How to ensure proper remote backups/security? What hosting specs we need (storage, bandwidth/transfer/backups, etc)?
- Do we need TWO different hosts (one for MainWP to manage all sites, & the one for all the sites)?
- Looking for solutions where we don't have to do server/hosting management ourself.
Please recommend solution that is most suitable for our situation, economical, secure, and scalable.
What kind cost are we looking at to run this many low traffic sites?

wordpress.com is built on WordPress Multi-site. And it has at least a million websites, I would hazard to guess. And a significant percentage of those have their own domain name.
So, the technology is sure up to "lots of sites" on a single WordPress Multi-site.
As for selling off a website, and separating it from Multi-Site, that was easy nearly a decade ago when I last tried it, and did it by hand. Now there are well-supported WordPress plugins that will do this for you.
Not being a party to how WordPress.com is implemented, I cannot say how many is too many when it comes to the number of websites on a single WordPress Multi-site.
So, the technology is sure up to "lots of sites" on a single WordPress Multi-site.
As for selling off a website, and separating it from Multi-Site, that was easy nearly a decade ago when I last tried it, and did it by hand. Now there are well-supported WordPress plugins that will do this for you.

Yes, it worth looking around and doing some testing to determine which plugin works best. For example, I could see any size restrictions on the free version of this one: https://wordpress.org/plugins/prime-mover/
I just checked Prime Mover, it seems to be the best out of them all going by user reviews. It does have unlimited sites lifetime license for $630 one-time pay. I will look in to it. Thanks.

It would be unlikely you would be transferring thousands of sites at once and so those Plugins would do the job fine.
If the sites are all going to be reasonably low traffic to start off with then a couple of VPS servers running on KVM for dedicated resources would do the job. you could always upgrade to dedicated servers when the need arises.
To save on licensing Direct Admin would do the job for a control panel that way you can save on license cost. You didn't mention the location for the audience for these sites but you could always use a CDN to assist with distributing content globablly.
But you would need some sort of managed server as shared hosting won't really work for this project.
You would outgrow reseller hosting pretty quickly.
I would recommend to even start with a VPS and then as traffic grows you can migrate to Dedicated server.
With these many number of sites you might hit the Inodes limit if you are looking for Shared hosting. Many providers offer unlimited disk space but do have a limitation on Inodes.
There is a way to configure your WordPress install to use a separate wp-config.php and wp-content directory for each site but place the other WordPress files in a common directory and include it whenever you need. This way you will use a much lower inode count and WordPress core could be updated easily. As you mentioned you are not technical so you can ask your hosting provider if they can assist you with this setup.
